Next to FOG OVER FRISCO, this film may be the fastest in pace ever put on celluloid, so clipped and startling in cuts that the technique might have been the unintentional work of an overworked editor, Loeffler. The feel and atmosphere of the crime-ridden year of 1933 is very much in curious evidence as Dunn, a leader of a confidence gang, entices small-town girl Bennett to try her luck in the big city. She does, changing from sweet thing to hard street dame giving Dunn what he dishes out. A great assortment of colorful characters wisecrack and cavort through scene after spastic scene, running over dialog (as Capra intentionally used to speed up action in AMERICAN MADNESS), accelerating actions and skipping any logical transitions in their rush to Broadway where cops chase burlesque-attending gangsters and con men stand on every corner. A hectic, almost dizzying film that holds attention to the last neurotic minute. (Remade as JITTERBUGS.) leave a comment
