Tough reporter Colbert, stationed in France, becomes sick and tired of writing about fashion and decides to do a hard-hitting war story. She travels to Spain to investigate the whereabouts of noted rebel Milland and ends up freeing him from Zucco's jail by posing as his wife. They steal a plane and escape to France, where their exploits become page one news. Colbert is given a Berlin assignment by her editors for her daring reporting, and she gladly accepts, partly to escape the amorous advances of her "husband" Milland. She takes a train to Berlin, but runs into Milland in one of the cars. The two realize their love for each other and decide to spend a few days (and nights) at a secluded French inn. At that moment, the Nazis invade Poland, and "ace" reporter Colbert misses the story completely. When their ship back to the states is torpedoed, Colbert and Milland escape without injury, but the event makes them realize that the work they could do in the war is far more important (for the moment) than their new-found love. Milland joins the RAF and Colbert returns to the typewriter. Highly enjoyable, fast-paced wartime adventure/comedy with a delightful chemistry very evident between Colbert and Milland. The script by Brackett and Wilder is a treasure chest of humorous innuendo and hard, but sweet, characterizations that won an Academy Award. The film was also nominated for Best Interior Decoration and Best Score. leave a comment
