Big Bug movie aficionados will shudder as an eight-legged extra-terrestrial attempts to mate with earthlings. Something's rotten on an island deep in the South Pacific, and it comes from Outer Space! Freelance pilot Lauren Mercer's (Alex Reid) brother, an Air Force officer, crashed near an isolated atoll so she welcomes charter flights to that area. Opportunity knocks in the person of great white hunter, Ned Valentine (Chris Potter), who's been hired by Dr. Samuel Leon (Jose Sancho) and his assistant, Susana (Neus Asensi), to lead a scientific expedition to the remote atoll, where a virus is decimating the indigenous population. Keeping her personal motives secret, Lauren takes off with the uptight scientists, assorted local bearers, Ned and his security team and etymologist Dr. Henry Capri (Ravil Isyanov). Once there, the medical explorers discover an island behemoth that forces planes, including theirs, to land; the chameleon-like fiend the busies itself infecting crash survivors and innocent islanders. The spider monster's mission is to squirt its DNA into human beings and create a hardy new race. Though the island native are handy with poison darts, they can't outrun the impervious alien arachnid, which sprays an infectious acid that implants eggs into human hosts. Seeking just the right ratio of alien-to-human components, the alien spins a web around Dr. Capri, who begs the others to put him out of his misery. Although Ned manages to avoid implantation, he contracts a fever after being attacked, while various others become arachnid-carriers or spider food. How can the survivors put the perfect space specimen out of commission and get off the island before they become human incubators? This jungle-horror flick is enjoyable in the cheesy manner of a Chiller Theater film and has a few surprises under its pith helmet. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
