Not content simply to disgust audiences with his ultraviolent, ultramindless FRIDAY THE 13TH series of slasher movies, producer Mancuso decided to put a spin on the tired formula--making a comedy out of it with the help of screenwriter Bach (BEVERLY HILLS COP). Eight college friends (Baker, Goodrich, Olandt, O'Neal, Pinsent, Rohner, Steel, and Wilson) are invited for an April Fool's weekend party at the island mansion of heiress and fellow classmate Foreman. The hostess greets her friends with a sly smile that betrays the fact that they will soon be subjected to a seemingly endless series of April Fool's jokes, including collapsing chairs, whoopee cushions, dribble glasses, squirting faucets, and the like. Things suddenly turn serious when the guests start to be dipatched by an unseen assassin, as in Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians. Mostly played for laughs, APRIL FOOL'S DAY is clever enough; but, as is the case with all stalk-and-slash films, it becomes repetitive and boring very quickly. The truly revolting special effects are kept to a minimum, and the standard sex scenes are handled relatively discreetly, the obvious intent being to parody those in other slasher films. leave a comment
