Predicated on the dubious notion that if you save someone's life he becomes your responsibility, this slight, strained French comedy revolves around a sap who takes on the lugubrious burden of a suicidal sad sack. Middle-aged headwaiter Antoine (Daniel Auteuil) practically runs trendy bistro Chez Jean, maintaining relationships with suppliers, charming customers and covering for staffers he's too kind-hearted to chastise for their incompetence. Late for dinner with his girlfriend Christine (Maryline Canto) — you know it's not the first time — he takes a shortcut through the park and interrupts the dumpy Louis (Jose Garcia) just as he tries to hang himself from a tree. Not content with one good deed, Antoine invites the complete stranger to spend the night at his apartment, fixes him dinner, helps him intercept the suicide note he mailed to his elderly grandparents and generally turns his own life upside-down in an effort to get Louis' back in order. Louis has been wallowing in self-pity ever since he was dumped by his girlfriend, Blanche (Sandrine Kiberlain), so Antoine sets out to find her and reunite them. His clumsy efforts at ingratiating himself with Blanche produce no end of complications. He buys hundreds of dollars worth of canceled-wedding decorations from her flower shop, presenting them to the exasperated Christine as proof that he hasn't forgotten their anniversary, though of course he has; the bride and groom figurines tucked among the blossoms have the unwanted effect of convincing her that he's proposing with flowers. Antoine subsequently purchases a slew of houseplants in an effort to maneuver Blanche into catching her new fiancé in flagrante with a waitress and gets Louis, who can't tell a merlot from a marble, hired as a sommelier at Chez Louis. And to cap it all off, just as Louis seems to be getting his life back on track, Antoine realizes that he himself is falling in love with Blanche, a development he must hide from both Christine and Louis lest he find himself at ground zero of a major emotional meltdown. Like most contemporary romantic comedies, the film's plot works only if you accept that everyone behaves like a complete and utter idiot at all times, telling lies that must inevitably be uncovered at the least convenient moment by the worst possible person. How amusing you find the story's wacky complications will depend entirely on how charming you find the clammy Garcia, wan Kiberlain and ever-amiable Auteuil.
