Well-crafted Tourneur domestic drama portrays a Nobel Prize-winning author (Blanchar) at the turn of the century tolerating a wife (Renant) who flagrantly cheats on him with a drunken newspaperman; Blanchar himself has cheated on Renant with Pascal, a mistress now dead. When Renant
discovers that her husband has another child, Ledoyen, she takes the child home with her to care for as one of her own. An intriguing, well-acted and sharply directed film; the masterful Tourneur was able to shoot this movie for $83,000, much less than the budget he was allowed, this in a day when
French directors insisted upon massive budgets to make even the most pedestrian films.
