Set in rural Pennsylvania in 1927, APPRENTICE TO MURDER is the saga of teenager Lowe, who falls under the influence of Svengali-like faith healer Sutherland after Sutherland shows his powers by curing the boy's father of alcoholism. With Lowe at his side, Sutherland travels the
countryside, making holistic house calls. It isn't long before the association leads to tragedy, however. APPRENTICE TO MURDER features often breathtaking (although occasionally trite) cinematography but is overwhelmed by a bewildering lack of narrative focus. Moreover, this film, which purports
to be a mystery-thriller, is completely lacking in suspense or any real sense of menace.
