Morgan, the rage of Broadway musicals and nightclubs during the 1920s, is a fading burlesque singing star--she is shown to age on the stage as her born-in-a-trunk daughter grows up in a convent. The pathetic Morgan is being two-timed by a slippery boy friend. Moreover, she attempts to save her grown-up child from the clutches of fakes and ne'er-do-wells. Poignant though dated, this early talkie is rich in old burlesque backstage atmosphere and has many innovative techniques introduced by Mamoulian in his directorial debut. Then there is Morgan's singing, which is captivating and distinctive. She made her screen debut in this picture and would die of cirrhosis of the liver in 1941 at age 41. leave a comment
