Aphrodite

1982, Movie, NR, 90 mins

This silly, mildly erotic soft-core item stars Valerie Kaprisky, well-known in America as Richard Gere's costar in BREATHLESS, as a virginal French girl who is one of a number of aristocrats on a Mediterranean island in 1914. Horst Buchholz plays an arms dealer (the setting is just before the outbreak of WW I) who decides to stage a three-day reenactment of Pierre Louys' 1896 masterpiece of erotic literature, Aphrodite, with his guests as the stars and the entire island as their stage. The reluctant Kaprisky, of course, is a natural for the role of love goddess Aphrodite. The premise is an interesting one, but the filmmakers are concerned only with the eroticism, which becomes increasingly more decadent as the film rolls on. In the first few minutes alone one woman does an erotic dance in front of a one-way mirror, Kaprisky bathes herself, and there is a lesbian interlude between two guests, without any accompanying plot to speak of. APHRODITE may look like a French art film, but expect nothing more than an EMMANUELLE-type soft-core picture. Directed by Brit Robert Fuest, who brought us THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES. Although some actors appear to be speaking English, the picture looks and sounds dubbed. leave a comment
