The Ape

1940, Movie, NR, 63 mins

starstarstarstar
Kindly doctor Bernard Adrian (Boris Karloff), who has become obsessed with finding a cure for polio after his daughter's death, is convinced that the elusive cure can be found in the spinal fluid of human beings. Killing an escaped circus ape, Adrian dons the animal's hide and murders innocent townspeople, draining them of the precious fluid for his serum. THE APE was just one of nine Karloff films released in 1940, and it was easily one of the worst of his entire career. This picture came at the end of his contract with Monogram where he had languished in the "Mr. Wong" detective series, and his eagerness to get it over with shows. This is the kind of film Bela Lugosi was making on a regular basis and, in fact, it is often confused with Lugosi's THE APE MAN (1943). leave a comment
