Kindly doctor Bernard Adrian (Boris Karloff), who has become obsessed with finding a cure for polio after his daughter's death, is convinced that the elusive cure can be found in the spinal fluid of human beings. Killing an escaped circus ape, Adrian dons the animal's hide and murders innocent townspeople, draining them of the precious fluid for his serum.
