Aparajito

The young Apu (Gupta) and his newly widowed mother (Banerjee) struggle for existence in a small Indian town. Resisting a life in the priesthood, the boy persuades his mother to send him to school. Having done well in his studies over the years, as a young adult (now played by Ghosal) Apu wins a scholarship to the university in Calcutta. Engulfed in city life and the demands of his schoolwork, Apu gradually forgets about his mother.
