Antony And Cleopatra

Shakespearean drama starring Heston as a tense and obdurate Antony, this film suffers from too much historical hodgepodge. In fact, the film (produced for $1,600,000) relies solely on the importance of Heston's beautifully concentrated scenes. Neil is adequate as the Egyptian vamp but in no way compares with Vivien Leigh in CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA or even the trampy vixen enacted by Elizabeth Taylor in CLEOPATRA. Totally fascinating is Porter, Heston's unctuous aide who deserts him in the face of Octavius' armies. The script is commendably faithful to the Immortal Bard but in that sense almost stagey. This film saw no US release after completion. leave a comment
