Antonio Das Mortes

1969, Movie, NR, 100 mins

Powerful political film, with mercenary do Valle tracking down insurgents, killing all the members of one band and dispatching the leader in hand-to-hand combat in a wild bullet-ridden finale, only to discover his real sympathies are with the rebels. Clearly indebted to the directors of France's New Wave, Rocha would make greater films; nevertheless, ANTONIO DAS MORTES survives as a landmark in Brazil's emergent Cinema Novo by one of its finest filmmakers. Brazil's lush vegetation, mountains, and plains are beautifully photographed in this polemic, which lionizes the likes of revolutionary Che Guevara while indicting the cruel and impersonal landlords of a South American dictatorship. leave a comment
