ANOTHER WOMAN stars Gena Rowlands as an aging professor who realizes she has led an unemotional life and must look into the past in order to prepare herself for the future. She is married to a physician (Holm), has a close relationship with her stepdaughter (Plimpton), avoids her brother (Yulin), and fears the loss of her ailing father (Houseman). When she overhears a pregnant psychiatric patient's therapy session, Marion becomes obsessed with knowing all about the woman (Farrow), who reminds her of her younger self.

Full of the hand-wringing and self-consciously intellectual exchanges that characterize Allen's Bergmanesque outings, ANOTHER WOMAN benefits from a superb ensemble cast. An especially endearing final performance comes from the frail and obviously ailing Houseman, who was to die very shortly after the film's release. Nykvist's photography is impeccable, as is Loquasto's spare production design. leave a comment
