Provocative and moving, this gimlet-eyed documentary seeks to reconstruct the human being behind the cultural icon. Filmmaker Jon Blair's probing interviews with people who knew Anne Frank, both before and after her family retreated to the legendary "secret annex" in which she wrote her diaries, are expertly contextualized with footage, photos and narration (delivered by Kenneth Branagh). Ultimately, the revelations here of Anne's humanity -- among other things, we discover she was a bit of a brat -- prove far more affecting than the mythification we've been conditioned to expect. leave a comment
