ANNA
starstarstarstar
Similar in concept to Michael Apted's ongoing 7 UP series, but with an infinitely more personal touch, Academy Award-winning Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov's documentary captures the emotional, intellectual and political growth of his daughter as she matures from an adorably carefree 6-year-old to a party-line toeing adolescent to an uncertain and disillusioned teenager. On each of Anna's birthdays, Mikhalkov flouted the official Soviet ban on home moviemaking (subversive, don't you know) and filmed his daughter answering the same simple, loaded questions: What do you love most? What do you hate? What scares you the most? What do you want more than anything? What do you expect from life? Anna's answers change, naturally, as she becomes increasingly aware of the world around her, in particular the dramatic events shaping her own rapidly changing homeland. Mikhalkov's goal: to draw clear parallels between Anna's maturation and the deterioration of the Soviet Union. What he couldn't have anticipated is Anna's obvious discomfort in front of the camera -- her evident anxiety about giving her father the wrong answers hints at totalitarianism far closer to home than Party headquarters. leave a comment
