The second sequel to RE-ANIMATOR (1985) finds mad Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) imprisoned for his crimes but carrying on his research as best he can. Thirteen years after West was arrested before the horrified eyes of young Howard Phillips (Tommy Dean Musset), whose sister was killed by one of West's undead experiments, the grown Phillips (Jason Barry) prepares to begin his medical residency at the prison where West is an inmate. Corrupt Warden Brando (Simon Andreu) has his doubts about Phillips' request that West work with him in the prison infirmary, but agrees. West promptly reanimates Moses (Nico Baixas), a cannibal psychopath killed in a yard fight, with predictably bad results: Moses is alive, but madder and more dangerous than ever. West and Phillips set up a secret lab to explore the uses of "neo-plasmic energy" — NPE — which West now believes is the key to reanimating the dead with their mental faculties intact. Phillips, meanwhile, begins an affair with comely reporter Laura (Elsa Pataky), who's writing an expose about conditions at the prison; he doesn't realize that she's also started looking into West's background. Laura runs afoul of the Warden, who murders her; West and Phillips reanimate her with apparent success. But she soon complains that some murderous impulse has taken root within her brain, and she's afraid of what it might force her to do. Though it's not a patch on the original film, this sequel moves briskly and culminates in a bloody prison riot that includes a reanimated half-corpse, a junkie who injects himself with West's reanimating solution to dire effect, a nightmarish roomful of hanged but reanimated corpses and a reanimated rat log-rolling a twitching, reanimated penis down the hall. You don't see that every day (the rat and penis return in a pretty funny gag reel that runs during the film's closing credits). leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
