George C. Scott is his somnolent grandpa. Kathy Bates is his truck-driving lesbian mom. Young Angus (Charlie Talbert) is hopelessly in love with a pretty cheerleader. And he's fat. Seriously fat. How fat is he? So fat that running his underpants up the flagpole is a surefire laugh-getter. So fat that he must be the best, most sensitive person in the film, morally head and shoulders above all the trim, enticing blondes who torment him in cruel and unimaginative ways. It's another one of those earnest afterschool movies, so blandly goodhearted that it feels churlish to mention that it's cliched, two-dimensional and sledgehammer obvious. Of course it's not nice to make fun of the class porker. Did that ever stop anyone? leave a comment
