1951, Movie, NR, 99 mins

This delightful baseball comedy stars Paul Douglas as Guffy McGovern, the irascible manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are firmly entrenched in the basement of the National League until the prayers of a little girl (Donna Corcoran) prompt the angel Gabriel to intervene. When Guffy sees the divine light and turns over a new leaf, more angels--baseball greats of the past--lend a helping glove, and the Pirates start winning ball games, shooting to the top of the standings. Reporter Jennifer Paige (Janet Leigh) suspects the Pirates are receiving help from above and begins an investigation into the matter. Great performances by all make this a little gem of a film. Dwight Eisenhower, interviewed during his presidency, named this his favorite movie. Note the fleeting presence of Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio. leave a comment
