Loren delivers a baby, then abandons her tricks as a prostitute and becomes a waitress in Montreal to support the child. Her man, Vernon, returns from the Korean War, and though Loren assures him the child is his, he has his doubts. He goes back to working for underworld boss Huston, telling him that he cannot concentrate on any capers while the child is present in his house. Huston has the boy kidnapped as a favor and Vernon goes off on a stick-up but is turned in by Loren who knows he is behind the abduction. Vernon is captured, vowing revenge against Loren, and is shipped off to prison. It is 20-plus years later, 1976, and Loren is now the owner of a posh restaurant, falling in love with a youth, Railsback, who delivers meat to her kitchen, not knowing that he is her own long-lost son. Meanwhile, Vernon has been released from prison and he's gunning for the woman who betrayed him. A dreadful film from beginning to end, one where the principals move about like puppets muttering inane dialog. The entire film is done in low-key lighting, so low key as to strain the eyes with its murky scenes. This production was obviously one of those Canadian deals where Canada fronted the financing on the usual condition that most of the talent employed be Canadian, sort of vanity filmmaking where Hollywood stars avail themselves of quick big bucks in return for the use of their names to front a host of mediocre and unemployed Canadian actors and technicians. leave a comment
