An old-fashioned tale with roots in the "Beauty and the Beast" legend, ANGEL RIVER is set on the Arizona frontier in the 1870s. Johnson, best known for her role as the skating star in ICE CASTLES, here plays an innocent young woman who lives with her parents on a remote ranch. One sunny day, while bathing in a nearby river, Johnson is spied upon by a leering Mexican bandido, Sanchez. Sanchez abducts the girl, thus beginning a strange relationship between the two. ANGEL RIVER is a thoroughly well-intentioned film that attempts to return to a long-lost idea of fairy-tale-style romance. Johnson and Sanchez do what they can with their characters, but neither of them is able to carry off the task--more a criticism of the weak direction and dialog, which is too naive to prove effective. leave a comment
