The first film produced by and starring John Wayne, ANGEL AND THE BADMAN is the story of an outlaw trying to change his life. Wayne, wounded, collapses on the doorstep of a Quaker family. While they nurse him back to health, he begins to fall in love with the daughter, Russell. Gradually the gunslinger begins to realize that his outlaw days are numbered and he begins to change his ways, even though he is obsessed with killing Cabot, the murderer of his foster-father. Though the Quakers have had a great influence on him, Wayne sets out to get his revenge. Russell follows and gets Wayne to turn over his gun to her before he can kill Cabot. However, the murderer is then dispatched by the local sheriff, Carey, before Cabot can kill a defenseless Wayne. Wayne and Russell ride off to start a new life together. Great performances from a top-notch cast make this gentle western well worth seeing. Though the film didn't do well at the box office at the time, it stands up better today than most of Wayne's other, more action-packed westerns. leave a comment
