Sad, well-acted and never cute, this poignant drama sidesteps the sentimental trap of suggesting that mental illness is a form of untamed genius. Harry (John Lynch) and Kate (Jacqueline McKenzie), both schizophrenic, maintain a shaky hold on reality through group therapy and medication. She lives in a magical world of omens and metaphorical thinking, receiving guidance from the Wheel of Fortune bonus round, while he's always teetering on the brink of fury. Intelligent, educated and capable, he's too fragile to put those traits to work for him: Instead, the very qualities that should be his strengths make him frustrated and antagonistic. The wounded pair fall in love, move in together and try to live ordinary lives, but Kate's pregnancy pushes them back into the grip of their inner demons and precipitates the unraveling of their sadly circumscribed new life. First-time feature director Michael Rymer strikes a fine balance between admiring the couple's free-spiritedness and doomed defiance with the sad fact that they can't function in the day-to-day world. And through Morris and Louise (Colin Friels and Deborra-Lee Furness), Harry's brother and sister-in-law, Rymer makes sure we never forget that Kate and Harry aren't the only ones who suffer: Louise is all steely common sense and Morris is filled with thwarted good intentions, but they've both given over too much of their own lives to trying to cope with Harry's troubles. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
