A solid, precise, well-made Lumet film, with tough ex-convict Connery, an habitual criminal, looking for a big score immediately upon leaving prison. He goes to the syndicate to seek funds to back a massive robbery, intending to ransack a posh East Side New York apartment building. Rounding up a gang of top-flight thieves, Connery proceeds to plan and carry out his caper, unaware that he is being taped at every turn by various government agencies to discover his links with organized crime. He and his men break into each apartment that is unoccupied--he has determined in advance what tenants are present--and carries out the systematic looting of each place. There are so many lawmen listening in that it seems the whole world is bugged. A good example of the now-neglected caper genre. leave a comment
