De Mornay is a wrongly imprisoned young woman who aspires to be a rock 'n' roll star. As a single woman with no job prospects or family, De Mornay has little chance for parole, unless she finds herself a husband. The man who fits the bill is Spano, a prison handyman and unmarried father, who agrees to enter into the marriage as a business proposition. But De Mornay discovers she has gone from a real prison to the symbolic prison of a husband and family.
