"Tomorrow's putrefaction day," announces a professor brightly, setting the tone for this gory medical horror picture. Apparently patterned after SCREAM, it also owes a considerable debt to NIGHTWATCH and COMA. Premed student Paula Henning (Franka Potente, the flame-haired star of RUN, LOLA, RUN) has just earned admittance to the celebrated medical school in Hiedelberg where her beloved grandfather was once dean. But she has trouble concentrating on her studies. High-handed Professor Grombek (Traugott Buhre) makes no secret of his belief that women don't belong in medical school, the older students play grisly pranks on the new arrivals, and Paula's flirtatious roommate Gretchen (Anna Loos) badgers her to find a boyfriend, like that handsome Caspar (Sebastian Blomberg, the Bruce Campbell of Germany). Worst of all, Paula pulls the sheet off her dissection class cadaver and finds the body of a young man she knows. Though he had a congenital heart disorder, she doesn't believe he died of natural causes. And we know she's right, because we've already seen what goes on behind the medical school's polished steel doors: Poor schmucks are being drugged and flayed alive by teams of callously cheerful medicos. Paula starts snooping around, surreptitiously taking blood and tissue samples and learning that someone is injecting people with a drug that turns living tissue to plastic. Further investigation leads her to the Anti-Hippocratic Society, a group of doctors who put the needs of researchers above those of patients — Josef Mengele was a member. Can Paula expose them before they silence her forever? Director Stephan Ruzowitzky delivers some spooky images, notably the medical specimen room, and a couple of gory gags. But the film's tone is hard to pin down, especially with the actors dubbed flatly into English (Potente's voice is especially awful, but Blomberg's runs a close second); self-conscious irony is hard to translate. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
