Based on a novel by P.D. James, this gripping murder mystery revolves around the suicide of a tycoon's son who is found hanging in a well. Cordelia Gray (Pippa Guard), a 23-year-old female private investigator--whose unlikely career choice gives the film its title--becomes increasingly engrossed in the case, living in the dead boy's quarters, nearly hanging herself while examining the well, and even making love to the boy's father. Her snooping reveals that the boy was actually murdered and implicates the least suspect of the characters. UNSUITABLE JOB FOR A WOMAN is aptly directed by Christopher Petit (RADIO ON), whose camera never seems to be in a rush to photograph a scene--always lingering on the subject a little longer than necessary, which adds an offbeat atmosphere to the film. leave a comment
