An Indecent Obsession: Review

Though this film is expertly photographed, the story of recuperating Australian soldiers during WW II, attended by a beautiful nurse, Wendy Hughes, drags in many spots and never reaches a satisfactory conclusion. Hughes takes care of five men in a field hospital mental ward and is revered by her patients until Gary Sweet arrives. Unlike the others, he is self-confident and so considerate of the others that Hughes is drawn to him physically and emotionally. One of the other patients, Richard Moir, takes a dislike to the newcomer when he observes Hughes's affection for Sweet. As preposterous as this film is, it has a few good moments, but the overwrought script, based on a novel by Colleen McCullough, has too much soul-baring conversation and not enough dramatic incident. The script does allow, though, for some occasionally impressive histrionics by Hughes, Sweet, and Moir, plus a welcome comic turn by Tony Sheldon and a touching one by Bruno Lawrence. leave a comment
