An ambitious and admirable independent film that presents a human and realistic view of the plight of the Mariel boat-people prisoners allowed to leave Castro's Cuba in 1980, the story follows the hapless Rabasa, a Cuban who wound up in Castro's jail through a quirk of fate. After spending nearly two decades in prison, Rabasa suddenly finds himself released and on a boat headed for Miami. Suffering from culture shock, the refugee is taken in by an old friend, Medina, whose family fled Cuba in 1958. But Rabasa finds himself discriminated against by longtime Cuban-Americans because of the stigma surrounding the Mariel boat people, and he has difficulty finding work. To add to his troubles, his ex-wife (Gil), who left him to rot in prison when she emigrated to Miami years ago, now seeks a reconciliation. Written and directed by playwright Acosta, AMIGOS is an insightful examination of the Cuban-American experience that pulls no punches and harbors no illusions. In addition to the rather-biting social observations, Acosta brings a great sense of warmth, humor, and compassion to his film and presents us with a well-balanced view of the characters that is as entertaining as it is enlightening. leave a comment
