The All-American

1953, Movie, NR, 82 mins

Tony Curtis stars as Nick Bonelli, an All-American quarterback who quits school after his parents are killed in a bus accident on their way to see him play. After a brief period of mourning and moping, Nick transfers to a snobby school where he begins again to work magic on the football field. Withstanding the taunts of his wealthy teammates and avoiding the temptation of the off-limits bar tended by the voluptuous Susie (Mamie Van Doren), Nick again becomes a gridiron star with the help of his understanding girl friend (Lori Nelson). Like its 1932 namesake, THE ALL-AMERICAN is pleasant enough entertainment. It features both a fine performance by Curtis and appearances by real-life one-time All-Americans Tom Harmon of Michigan and Frank Gifford of USC. Another Trojan All-American, Jesse Hibbs, was the director, and still another, D.D. Beauchamp, coscripted the film. leave a comment
