Divided into six "rounds," THE ALL-AMERICAN BOY stars Voight as a talented would-be Olympic boxer willing to step over anyone on his way to the top (which he never reaches), including his girl friend, Archer (of FATAL ATTRACTION fame), whom he impregnates and then deserts. Writer-director
Charles Eastman seems to view Voight as a tragic antihero, but as the film wears on, the story and Voight's performance become increasingly irritating and manipulative. Shot in 1969, THE ALL-AMERICAN BOY sat mercifully on the producer's shelf until 1973. Perhaps it should have remained there.
