AMAZING GRACE AND CHUCK is the uplifting tale of what happens when all American professional sports events are halted in an appeal for nuclear disarmament. It's all due to the determination of Chuck Murdock (Joshua Zuehlke), a 12-year-old Little League pitcher from Montana who refuses to
pitch again after learning about the potential horrors of nuclear war. The news media take the story and run with it, inspiring Boston Celtics star Amazing Grace Smith (Alex English) to hang up his sneakers and join Murdock's campaign. Soon other athletes follow, until all of pro sports comes to a
standstill, putting pressure on the US president (Gregory Peck) to reach an agreement with the Soviets. English, who delivers a fine performance, is actually a longtime Denver Nuggets star. When legendary Boston coach Red Auerbach, who appears in the film as himself, was informed that English
would be playing a Celtic, he said, "I only wish I could keep him." Director Mike Newell (DANCE WITH A STRANGER) who might have fared better had he employed a more whimsical touch.
