A fan of Madame Raya's TV Chiller Theater, Alvin Chipmunk bugs his father and siblings, Simon and Theodore, with reports of supernatural sightings. He's the boy who cried Wolf Man. But he's unable to back up his paranoia until Lawrence Talbot moves next door. Meanwhile, shy Simon is miscast as Mr. Hyde opposite Theodore's Dr. Jeckyll is a school stage production. While Alvin and Theodore spend time spying on their lycanthropic neighbor, Simon flounders onstage until — he's bitten by a werewolf! When this former bully magnet undergoes a swift personality change, his castmates are duly impressed, but matters take a hairier turn when he starts living the part offstage. You wouldn't expect it to be any good, but this animated treat will delight baby boomers and their offspring too. Poking fun at its own goosebumps, this sprightly kiddie flick parodies horror movie legends while lightly delving into child psychology. For example, it's a smashing idea to have Simon deal with his timidity through drama. At no point, however, do any messages about self-confidence or brotherly bonding get in the way of silly escapism. The result is Halloween diversion that's as enjoyable as a bagful of candy. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
