Altered States

1980, Movie, R, 102 mins

Disregarding the warnings of his wife (Blair Brown), family, and friends, obsessive scientist Eddie Jessup (William Hurt) attempts to discover the truth about his inner self and man's relationship to the universe. After being introduced to the mind-expanding properties of some very magic mushrooms in South America, Jessup continues his experiments back in Boston in an isolation tank, periodically transforming into a misshapen, sheep-eating, gorilla-like monster, before being rescued from the epicenter of creation by his loving wife. Essentially a big-budget, modern-day version of a 1960s acid-trip film, ALTERED STATES was helmed by flamboyant, talented, but frequently self-indulgent director Ken Russell, who takes a confusing Paddy Chayefsky story and wraps it in a pretty package, but fails to bring any clarity to the silly affair. A visual feast for special-effects lovers and philosopher-mystics only. Nominated by the Academy for Best Sound and Best Original Score. leave a comment
