Inventive and frequently nerve wracking, this serial-killer film is shot from the POV of the psychopath, who pursues companionship with lethal directness. In England, lonely Alex (Claire Goose) opens her soul to an ineffectual caseworker (Miriam Margolyes) on a regular basis. Though Alex's only companions since the death of her parents 13 years earlier have been the schizophrenic voices in her head, the apathetic caseworker fails to diagnose mousy Alex as a psychotic predator with flawed interaction skills. Whenever a stranger rejects Alex's friendly overtures, she goes ballistic; her latest casualty tumbles down a flight of stairs. Inspector Hannah (John Shrapnel) immediately scours the scene for clues, even though his detective trainee, Jen (Isabel Brook), concludes the cause of death was an accidental fall. When another young woman, Sarah (Caroline Carver), reports a break-in at her flat, Jen and the desk sergeant dismiss her as a hysteric. Sarah winds up a homicide victim — both force fed and inoculated with a paralyzing agent that induced a fatal allergic reaction by Alex — and Jen feels responsible. Realizing that her criminal detection skills need overhauling, she decides to explore Hannah's hunches about the recent killings. Meanwhile, Alex zeroes in on her next pal, Charlotte (Laurel Holloman), the caseworker's sympathetic secretary. When the uninvited Alex refuses to leave her apartment, Charlotte runs for her life and gets struck by a car. As she recovers at the hospital, Hannah and Jen lay a trap for Alex, who has unfinished business with Charlotte. The film achieves an enviable goose-bump quota as Alex foists her friendship on unsuspecting victims, despite though the director Phil Claydon's over-reliance on aural and visual tricks that actually distance viewers from his film's admirably eerie ambience. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
