This film, which was finished in 1974 and took 11 years to find a brief release, tells the story of Marcello Mastroianni, a man who used to be a revolutionary leader and is now trying to live a life of tranquility in Italy just after Napoleon's triumphs. Mastroianni gets involved with some of his old pals but does his best to get them out of his life. He leaves his girl friend, Lea Massari, for the younger Mimsey Farmer. In keeping with the quirky style of writers-directors Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, the film has several moments in which the actors begin to sing, and even a rousing marching song is heard whenever the revolutionaries parade across the screen. The film also has a number of brief but frantic dance sequences, though none of the tunes or twirls would qualify this as a musical. A truly weird film--but not without some charm--mostly because of Mastroianni, Farmer, Massari, and the continual surprises that come hurtling off the screen.
