A fine example of what a sense of humor can do with a low budget and an old idea. Twelve years after being flushed into the sewers where it's been snacking on the discarded bodies of growth-hormone-pumped animals, the humongous title creature is ready for dinner: L.A. Sure, it sounds stupid, and it is. But it's also a lot of fun: Screenwriter John Sayles and director Lewis Teague have loaded their monster movie with visual puns, film-buff jokes and a few genuinely frightening moments.
