Screenwriter Charles Kephart's portrait-of-the-artist-as-a-young-virgin was probably a therapeutic experience for him, but viewers will probably be less charmed by its parade of dated sex fantasies. Shy Jones Dillon (Elijah Wood) leaves home for college, taking with him two prized possessions — a steamer trunk and a typewriter — that allegedly belonged to his father. Jones idealizes his absentee dad's memory, while he's thoroughly dismissive of his self-absorbed mother, Blanche (Elizabeth Perkins); when Jones needs to vent he types, but never mails, notes to his daddy which he subsequently stores in his trunk. Jones moves into a rooming house and has his first encounters with the opposite sex, though he gets off to a rocky start; neighbor Jane (Franka Potente) mistakes Jones for a stalker and maces him. Jones' other neighbor, manipulative acting student Lisa (Mandy Moore), is outwardly more friendly. But when she spots the peace offering — a photograph — that Jane slips under Jones' door, she it. Fortunately, Jones has yet another neighbor, gay, worldly-wise cowboy and painter Brad (Aaron Pearl), who teaches him to avoid making snap judgments about people. Jones eventually falls for Jane and realizes that Lisa's is a tease whose first priority is her own interests. Jones loses his virginity to Jane, but before their feelings can gel they have a car accident and Jane's old beau shows up offering to care for her and mend his cheating ways. Jane dismisses Jones as a one-night stand, and if he wants to win her back he's going to have to do some growing up — which includes attaining a clear-eyed assessment of both his parents. A predictable coming-of-age movie padded with dream sequences. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
