After two years of twisting in the wind under a pair of terrible titles (the current one isn't great, but it beats "The Hairy Bird") and a stint in direct-to-video oblivion, this smart and sassy teen comedy about life in an all-girls prep school in the early '60s finally gets its due. Dismayed to discover their daughter's brand new diaphragm, Odette "Odie" Sinclair's (Gaby Hoffman) parents ship her off to Miss Godard's Preparatory School for Girls before she can use it. Odie is convinved that between the "high walls and lesbians" she'll be undersexed and miserable, and giggling roommates Trina von Steffen (Kirsten Dunst) and Tinka Parker (Monica Keena) aren't exactly consolation prizes. But headmistress Miss McVane (Lynn Redgrave) suggests Odie give them a chance, and Odie discovers girls a lot like herself: smart, confident and nursing some serious plans for their futures. Trina, Tinka and their friends comprise the D.A.R. — Daughters of the American Ravioli, in honor of their favorite pilfered snack-food — a secret support group whose agenda includes helping Odie lose her virginity and burning a lecherous male teacher. The D.A.R. and the film come into their own when Miss Godard's is threatened by a merger with a nearby boys school. The girls snap into action, sabotaging a mixer and seizing control of the campus to save the school they love — a rare place where girls come first. Under the candy coating and girl group soundtrack, the film acknowledges some hard truths about women and education that haven't changed much since the '60s. But it never loses sight of having a good time, and the girls are great; Dunst sparkles, and Rachael Leigh Cook is hilarious as a draconian student monitor.
