Actress Stanwyck, divorced from her family, returns to her hometown to see her daughter in a school play. Although her lifestyle is much different from the complacent townspeople's, she stays in an attempt to rebuild her family. Director Sirk, a talented social commentator via his soap-operalike films, was apparently displeased with the happy ending insisted upon by producer Hunter, but Stanwyck's powerful performance and the director's dissection of small-town values make this a still-compelling drama, typical of Sirk's excellent work. leave a comment
