Hard-hitting performances by de Wilde and Beatty as two brothers with polarized personalities highlight a generally depressing film. De Wilde idolizes Beatty, refusing to see him for the callous, indifferent, and ruthless fellow he is. Malden and Lansbury are superb as the tolerant mother and father who take in Saint. When Beatty returns home, he quickly seduces Saint, makes her pregnant, then deserts her, causing Saint to commit suicide. De Wilde, who has loved the woman from afar, finally realizes the true character of his brother and sets out to kill him. When confronting Beatty, however, he loses heart as Beatty sobs like a helpless child. De Wilde leaves him, forever free of the spell, finally matured into manhood. The film overreaches itself in making its point, and much of it is sordid and dismal for its own sake, but the acting is both compelling and memorable. Playwright Inge, author of this film, ironically chose to end his life as did Saint in the film. leave a comment
