A disappointing effort from producer Gale Ann Hurd (THE TERMINATOR; ALIENS), this film does present an intriguing premise. How would America assimilate a race of outer-space aliens into its society? In the late 1980s a giant spaceship full of genetically bred slaves crashes in the Mojave Desert. Dubbed "Newcomers," the 100,000 aliens are given refuge and made citizens. By 1991 the Newcomers have been pushed into the slums of Los Angeles, where some overcome economic disadvan... read more leave a comment

Tim Minear and SyFy Explore a New Alien Nation

Sci Fi Channel, which on July 6 will relaunch as SyFy, is developing a new take on the 1988 movie Alien Nation. Tim Minear (Angel, Firefly) will pen the series.

Previously adapted in 1989 as a short-lived Fox series (succeeded by five TV-movies), Alien Nation follows a human cop and his alien detective partner, against the backdrop of Earth's begrudging assimilation of ETs banished from their home world, where they served as slaves. The original film starred James Caan and Mandy Patinkin (sporting a prosthetic scalp).

It seems like every other ...

Question: It seems like every other movie I see advertised is based on a TV show, like The Dukes of Hazzard. But what about the other way around? I know there was a series based on My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but what other TV series have been based on a movie, and were any of them good?

Answer: There have been a handful of top-notch TV shows based on movies. The flop Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) was revived as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003); Robert Altman's acerbic M*A*S*H* (1970) became the long-running M*A*S*H (1972-1983); Neil Simon read more

ThresholdHow gross was it to watch the woman at the hot-dog cart basically explode? But that was nothing compared to the creep-out factor at the fact that this weird alien infection can be passed sexually and that it can reproduce. Alien babies? That just doesn't sound good, since these aren't the nice little extraterrestrials like the ones on Alien Nation. (On a side note: As someone who is eight-months pregnant, I think those aliens were onto something with the males of the species bearing children.) But back to Threshold, I can't believe Elizabeth Berkley is really dead. I mean, it just seemed too easy to kill her. Plus, for an alien she was kinda cool, smart, intelligent and definitely sexy. Not that Carla isn't a knockout in her own right, but i read more
