Alien Force

1997, Movie, NR, 85 mins

Borrowing equally from STARMAN (1984) and THE HIDDEN (1987), the amateurish ALIEN FORCE has nothing to recommend it, unless you were such a big fan of the "Batman" TV series that you'll endure anything to see one of its principals (in this case, former "Boy Wonder" Burt Ward) onscreen.

The ruler of Praximus 18 (Burt Ward) sends warrior Trace (Tyrone Wade) to Earth to retrieve a football-sized egg, disguised as a meteor. The egg contains the life-essences of the race of Boxcillians, immortal beings who inhabit the bodies of other living creatures. Trace must destroy the egg before it is found by Gorek, the last remaining Boxcillian.

In Los Angeles, the egg is found by Sandy (Roxanne Coyne). The egg is also sought by rogue FBI agent Jack Vincent (Michael Wayne) and his rookie assistant Dana Harley (Valerie Belardinelli). They cross paths with Gorek, who (unknown to Harley) takes control of Vincent's body. Trace tracks the egg to Sandy's house, saves her from her murderous ex-boyfriend, and the two hit the road, one step ahead of Vincent. Their destination is Lake Renwyck, site of a meteor that can either destroy or revive the egg. Needing rest, Trace and Sandy stop at a motel where the alien discovers (and enjoys) human sex. Vincent, who has disposed of the suspicious Harley, gets the egg away from Trace by threatening to kill Sandy. All parties get to the lake, which is under government control. In the ensuing battle, Sandy destroys the egg, Vincent is killed by Harley (who has also followed them there), and Gorek's life-essence is captured and destroyed by Trace. In order to save her from soldiers who are about to kill them for trespassing, Trace teleports Sandy home with him.

Good acting, exciting fight choreography, a novel script, cutting-edge special effects--ALIEN FORCE lacks them all. The effects in particular are so cheesy (strictly flashing lights and immobile rubber masks) that one wonders why their creators are so prominently credited: can they possibly be proud of this work? Preposterously chiseled star Tyrone Wade (who also choreographed the ho-hum fights) tests the limits of his abilities when, to demonstrate Trace's befuddlement at this strange human body he is inhabiting, he removes his shirt and bounces his pecs for the camera. But the worst performance award easily goes to someone bafflingly given special billing as "Film Star Randal Malone," who provides the most egregiously stereotyped portrayal of a big sissy since--well, maybe ever.
