An ancestor of director Wenders's 1984 film PARIS, TEXAS, this low-budget West German picture follows Vogler, a German journalist traveling across the US East Coast in search of a story. He considers Polaroid snapshots a better way to capture America's landscapes, buildings, and signs than writing about them. While trying to return to Germany, Vogler meets Kreuzer and her nine-year-old daughter, Rottlander, who are also trying to arrange a flight home. Kreuzer mysteriously disappears, leaving Rottlander in Vogler's care, setting up the premise of this hypnotic odyssey, the beginning of a loosely connected Wenders road-movie trilogy (it was followed in 1975 by WRONG MOVE and, one year later, KINGS OF THE ROAD--all three starring Vogler). Like Vogler, Wenders is a documentarian who fills his frame with images of American culture (a hot dog stand, a used car lot, Shea Stadium) and strains of American music ("Under the Boardwalk," Canned Heat, Chuck Berry) to tell his story. leave a comment
