Austrian doctor Barthelmess takes the blame for a friend's illegal operation and goes to prison. Urged by his stepmother, he returns to surgery after his release from jail. After his sordid past is discovered by the authorities, he performs one more operation (saving his stepmother's
life) and runs off to a little farm to marry his half-sister, Marsh. Unappealing melodrama with the cast's American accents sounding curiously out of place in the Teutonic surroundings. A note to Karloff fans: he appears in a small role as an autopsy surgeon (shades of Dr. Frankenstein) but was
