Mitchell is a crusading judge who aspires to the governorship and, in an off moment, remarks that he'd sell his soul to the Devil if he could win the post, ironically so that he could do good for mankind. Milland, as Nick Beal, the Devil in disguise, appears to aid Mitchell at every turn on his political rise, using as his surrogate the conniving Totter. But when Milland comes to collect Mitchell's elusive soul, both Mitchell and Totter outwit him with the help of Protestant minister Macready, the judge's close friend. Milland is excellent as old Beelzebub, in modern dress for this contemporary Faustian morality play, never overstating his evil presence, bathed eerily in shadows, hovering in the dark, stepping forth to demonstrate his fire and brimstone with a lighted match, a little trail of smoke that passes for fog. Mitchell is both a convincing law-abiding judge and a frightened soul. Lindon's lighting is a minor masterwork of grays and softly defined shadows and Waxman's score is murky and full of foreboding. Farrow's direction fully utilizes the well-written script and the strange set designs to effect an otherworld feeling. leave a comment
