Alexander's Ragtime Band

1938, Movie, NR, 105 mins

28 of Irving Berlin's greatest songs make this energetic, handsomely mounted production a must-see for musical fans. Spanning the years 1915 through 1938, the film follows the fortunes of Roger Grant (Tyrone Power), a Nob Hill San Franciscan who gives up his classical musical training in favor of playing ragtime. Grant starts his own "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (named for the song) and hires Stella Kirby (Alice Faye) as his singer. He falls in love with Kirby, but has a romantic rival in the shape of Charlie Dwyer (Don Ameche). Berlin was particularly pleased with Faye, of whom he said "I'd rather have Alice Faye introduce my songs than any other singer I know." With her limpid, bovine eyes and her throbbing contralto, Faye is the film's outstanding feature (best moment: her first outing with the band), but fans of the musical will also be interested in seeing young Ethel Merman strut her vintage stuff. leave a comment
