If you still have nightmares involving the climax of AIRPORT 1975 -- in which bug-eyed Karen Black gets on-the-job pilot training from Charlton Heston -- beware! This kid-oriented picture recycles the same airborne disaster scenario, but with two differences: It doesn't feature a stellar cast of has-beens and the instant pilot is a teenage girl. Raymond Stone (Joe Mantegna), the volatile CEO of Teknacom Inc., anxiously awaits the landing of his company jet. In addition to assorted trusty aides, Flight 109 carries precious cargo: Stone's self-absorbed daughter Nicole (Elisha Cuthbert). After lightning blows a hole in the fuselage and electrocutes the pilot, all the adults onboard are incapacitated by oxygen deprivation. Unable to rouse the others, panic-stricken Nicole kvetches on the radio to air traffic control. As control-freak Stone grouses, the ground crew runs through a repertoire of damage control, but to no avail. Could another airplane deposit a rescue crew on doomed Flight 109? Can Nicole fix the jammed auto-pilot function? Will she overcome adolescent ennui and save her fellow passengers? Will viewers remain on the edge of their seats, or decide to leave the room? Even before all the air escapes, the cast is afflicted by that peculiar blandness common to Canadian productions, making it hard to care about the screenplay's trumped-up dilemmas. This picture might play well at a junior aviation conference, but more mature audiences will find this rehash unappealingly photographed and marred by cheapo special effects. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
