Set in a Quebec convent, this well-made mystery raises theological and philosophical questions as it unfolds its tale of the murder of a baby born to a young nun who has no recollection of the infant's conception or delivery. Jane Fonda, a chain-smoking court-appointed psychiatrist, is given the task of determining whether Meg Tilly, a beatific young nun, is sane, sainted, mad, or a murderer. But Anne Bancroft, the convent's mother superior, questions whether the answer to the mystery lies in psychology, setting up a faith-versus-reason confrontation that is the real focus of the film. John Pielmeier's award-winning 1982 play is adapted for the screen here by director Norman Jewison, and though the plot has some annoying holes, the dialogue and the performances are excellent. Both Tilly and Bancroft received Oscar nominations for their work, along with Georges Delerue for his original music score. leave a comment
